The Republic of Bulgaria is located in south-eastern Europe, in the center of the Balkan Peninsula neighboring the Black Sea between Romania and Turkey. Its Area is 112,912 km˛, and its 2007 population estimation is 7,322,858.

Bulgaria is recognized for its array, from the landscapes of the Alpine snow-capped mountains in the Balkan ranges to the mild and sunny weather of the Black Sea coast. Its status as a somewhat unknown country is part of its attraction. Bulgaria offers much to encounter for those who are willing to spend the time. You can find quaint rustic villages, ornate churches and monasteries, all along spectacular natural scenery. Bulgaria offers a good variety of leisure and cultural activities too.

Bulgaria joined NATO on March 29, 2004 and signed the Treaty of Accession on 25 April 2005. It became a full member of the European Union on January 1, 2007. The country has been a member of the United Nations since 1955, and is a founding member of OSCE. As a Consultative Party to the Antarctic Treaty, Bulgaria takes part in the governing of the territories situated south of 60° south latitude. Georgi Parvanov, the President of Bulgaria since January 22, 2002, was re-elected on October 29, 2006 and began his second term in office in January 2007.

Industry is very important to Bulgaria's economy. Although it is not very rich in reserves of coal, oil, and gas, it is a major producer of electricity and the most important exporter in the region due to the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant. A second plant, the Belene Nuclear Power Plant is now under construction, and there is a $1,400,000,000 project for construction of an additional 670 MW for the 500 MW Maritza Iztok 1 Thermal Power Plant.
